PA PAST PLAYERS
James E. Murdoch
1811 – 1893
Philadelphia, PA
Born in
Philadelphia, PA, James Murdoch desperately wanted a career as an actor. He got his chance in 1829, when he took the stage in Philadelphia’s Arch Street Theatre.
Known for his skills in both writing and recitation, Murdoch was one of the most famous actors in the country at the dawn of the Civil War. When the war broke out, he put his acting career on hold and gave speeches and lectures supporting the Union. Murdoch donated the money he made from speaking engagements to various soldiers’ causes.
