PA PAST PLAYERS

Mary S. Beatty Mary S. Beatty
1812 – 1868
Harrisburg, PA

Mary Beatty was president of the Ladies Union Relief Association in Harrisburg, PA. She and other women volunteered as nurses and caregivers for the soldiers returning to nearby Camp Curtin, the largest Union Army training facility during the Civil War.

When Camp Curtin was overwhelmed by a smallpox epidemic, the women transported soldiers to their homes to isolate the disease. Beatty proudly reported that the women of Harrisburg performed “their duty” for Union soldiers with pride and care.
